How to Spot Vision Problems in Kids: A Guide for Busy Moms

As a mom, you know your child better than anyone. You notice when they're not themselves, struggling with school, or squinting at the TV. But vision problems aren’t always obvious—and left unchecked, they can impact your child’s learning, confidence, and well-being.

We asked Dr. Bruce Reid, a seasoned optometrist, about the signs busy moms should watch for and how routine eye care can make a big difference. Here’s what he shared:

1. Common Signs of Vision Problems

If your child...

  • Squints at distant objects
  • Sits very close to the TV or holds books right up to their face
  • Complains of frequent headaches
  • Struggles with reading or loses focus quickly

…it might be time for an eye exam. These symptoms often point to nearsightedness, astigmatism, or eye strain that can affect their ability to concentrate and learn.

2. Even If They Don’t Complain, Get Them Checked

Dr. Reid explains, “Even if your child says everything looks fine, they might be farsighted, or their eyes may be working too hard without them knowing it. Regular eye exams help us catch these issues early.”

3. Eye Exams = Better School Performance

Kids who can’t see well often struggle in class. Undiagnosed vision problems can lead to slipping grades, behavioral issues, or a growing dislike of school. One exam can spot these issues early and help your child thrive.

4. Too Close for Comfort

Holding books too close or sitting near the screen isn’t just a sign of poor eyesight. “It can actually make nearsightedness worse over time,” says Dr. Reid. The earlier it’s caught, the better we can manage it.

5. Headaches Might Mean Eye Strain

If your child regularly complains of headaches—especially after reading or screen time—it could mean their eyes are working too hard.

When Should You Book?

Annual exams are best, even if nothing seems wrong. And if you spot any of the signs above, don’t wait. Your child’s world depends on how well they see it. Catching a vision problem early can improve school, confidence, and daily life.
